Earnhardt Jr., wife OK after Tenn. plane crash

A small plane carrying Dale Earnhardt Jr., his wife and 1-year-old dauhter ran off the runway and caught fire at the Elizabethton Municipal Airport in Tennessee on Thursday, Elizabethton fire chief Barry Carrier told reporters.

No one was killed in the crash and there were no serious injuries beyond cuts and abrasions, Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford said. However, Earnhardt Jr. was transported to Johnson City Medical Center. He was conscious and talking.

Earnhardt told ESPN’s Marty Smith in a text message that he and his family are OK.

Along with a pilot, the plane was also carrying Amy Earnhardt, their daughter Isla Rose, one other passenger and the family dog.

While Earnhardt Jr. no longer drives in NASCAR’s Cup Series, he’s scheduled to drive in the Xfinity Series race at Darlington Raceway on Aug. 31.
